Resources to celebrate United Nations Day October 24

The vision of a peaceful world – a world where lambs and wolves lie down together – led to the founding of the United Nations. Churches were present as the United Nations was created. The Commission to Study the Bases of a Just and Durable Peace of the Federal Council of Churches contributed language to the United Nations Charter.

Churches have maintained steadfast support for international cooperation through the years. Churches have worked and prayed that the UN might realize its high calling. Churches have created offices and ministries to participate in UN events and to advocate with the UN in the name of Jesus Christ.

Churches engage the UN by observing United Nations Day—the anniversary of the entry into force of the United Nations Charter on October 24, 1945. Celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948, the day has traditionally been marked throughout the world by meetings, discussions and exhibits on the achievements and goals of the organization.

Resources to observe United Nations Day in worship on Sunday, October 23 include prayers and a hymn:

Pray for the work of the United Nations.

Pray for those who work in the United Nations system.
